African American culture has always had an influence on my life.  There's never been a time when I haven't had at least one black friend.  One of my beautiful nieces is bi-racial.  Growing up my favorite doll was a black baby named Amanda.

It's never occurred to me to love anyone differently due to the color of their skin.

But then, no matter how I feel, I'm left with the task of teaching my children about the history of the United States of America.

It's my responsibility to explain why African Americans are treated so poorly after recounting all of the horrific details of the suffering they've endured and still endure today.

Thankfully, I've found a great way to achieve balance after teaching about all negative stuff.

I can teach my children about Kwanzaa!
