Book Recommendations for 9th Graders

Dinomite is going into 9th grade this year. One of his passions is reading. This year he's requested that he read as many classics as possible.

Over the summer he took it upon himself to read, War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and enjoyed it.

He and I worked together to create reading list for the upcoming school year that includes classics from the past and present.

If you are looking for book recommendations for 9th graders, we hope this list is a great help!

I used to create book lists that were much smaller, but Dinomite would work through them so quickly, I had to add more.

This year Dinomite is given a choice of twenty books of which he'll read at least fifteen. I like to give him a chance to say no to a few if they turn out to be not as great as they're supposed to be.

Check out this list of books!

1.  I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys

2. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer

3. Eragon by Christopher Paolini

4. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

5. The Maze Runner by James Dashner

6. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes

7. Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian

8. The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

9. Dune by Frank Herbert

10. The Da Vinci Code by by Dan Brown

11. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

12. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

13. The Catcher and the Rye by J.D. Salinger

14. The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway

15. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain

16. 1984 by George Orwell

17. Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare

18. All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

19. Dead Poets Society by N.H. Kleinbaum

20. The Pursuit of Victory by Roger Knight

I'm excited that Dinomite was willing to try out a few new genres this year. This list should lead to some pretty fantastic reading experiences. And for the record, he's the one who asked to read Julius Caesar!

If you find that the reading interests of your 9th grader are not the same as Dinomite's, you may want to check out Bulldozer's reading list for the year!

The two boys enjoy very different genres of books as you can now see.

And if you still don't find anything the reader in your life might like, be sure to check out Princess' reading list. Though she's in 7th grade, she reads above her grade level. Her list reflects that.
