Montessori Pink Series Activities and Free Printables

This year I have worked extremely hard to help the three older kiddos improve their reading and spelling skills.  Montessori always seems to be the way that works best!

Each of them is at a different level, so I found the best way to tackle the challenge was to start from the beginning, and introduce the Montessori Pink Series activities, which are CVC words.

I did this slowly, introducing one short vowel sound at a time, as Bulldozer was just beginning to read.

In order to meet the needs of the other two more advanced kiddos, I added a few variations to the activities.

When matching pictures and words, I wrote words in cursive and print, for those who wanted the extra challenge of reading words in cursive.

I added a grammar component to the picture and phrase activity.  Both Dinomite and Princess enjoyed these variations.

Our pink series activities and printables have been scattered throughout various unit study posts up to this point.

Now you can find them all here, in one place with links to each printable pack.

Each printable pack focuses on a different short vowel sound, as seen in the picture collages below.

You can use them separately like we did or mix and match them to create activities and printables more suited for your own children.

Materials used for these activities include the Montessori moveable alphabet in cursive, phonetic reading blocks, and wooden grammar symbols.

Figures used come from various Safari Ltd Toobs and miniature doll house accessories.

Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 1: Letter A

Montessori Beginning Language/Pink Series/CVC Words with the Letter A

The letter "a" is the perfect vowel to start with when learning CVC words. The sound is easy to make and there are multiple words that you can create for activities.

In the Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 1 you will find multiple resources to teach CVC words with the letter "a."

Note:  The words "car" and "jar" are not true short a letter words.  You are more than welcome to include them, but for those who prefer not to, you can easily eliminate them from activities and printables.

Montessori Pink Series Letter E Activities and Free Printables

Montessori Beginning Language/Pink Series/CVC Words with the Letter E

The letter "e" is always our second vowel to work with when learning letter sounds and CVC words. I've found it very important to distinguish between the short vowel sounds of a letter "a" and letter "e" early on to help with reading and spelling.

The Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 2 includes multiple resources to practice working on the short vowel sound "e" while learning CVC words.

Once a child feels comfortable with both short vowel sounds "a" and "e" you can combine the printable packs together for more of a challenge.

Montessori Pink Series Letter I Activities and Free Printables

Montessori Beginning Language/Pink Series/CVC Words with the Letter I

In our classroom kids tend to confuse the short vowel sound "i" with the short vowel sound "e," which is why we teach them back to back, giving each one a significant amount of time to master.

The Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 3 is perfect for helping students really nail down the short vowel "i" sound while developing confidence with CVC words at the same time.

Once the short vowel sound "i" CVC work is mastered, it's fun to combine it with work that includes letters "a" and "e," especially when practicing the difference between the three sounds.

Beginning language activities with the short vowel sound "o" can be so much fun! There's just something about the sound. Once kids master it that invites smiles and laughter.

The Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 4 includes some fabulous resources for mastering the short vowel sound "o" and CVC words at the same time.

I find that practicing short vowel sound "a" and "o" words together is very helpful, once both vowel sounds are learned with confidence. The letters look similar and the sounds can easily be confused.

Montessori Pink Series Letter U Activities and Free Printables

The short vowel sound "u" can be one of the most challenging, especially when distinguishing it from other vowels. It's so important to isolate the sound and spend a significant amount of time helping children become comfortable with it.

The Montessori Pink Series Printable Pack 5 isolates the short vowel sound "u" when learning CVC words. It can be used on its own or mixed with other pink series packs.

  1. Hi! I'm a longtime reader and teacher and have been loving your work and ideas! I just wanted to tell you to be careful with the short vowel word syllable you choose for the pink series - when an /r/ follows a vowel, it changes the sound of the vowel to be r-controlled!

    1. Thank you very much for bringing that to my attention! I completely missed it while putting this together. I'm so glad to read that you enjoy the blog and hope you continue to come back and visit.

    2. I went back and checked all of my short "a" activities. The only two instances where this occurs is the activity with the moveable alphabet and with one card in the printable that represents "jar." So for those who want to remove those from the activity, it's quite easy to do so!
